Hallowatch 2026 No. 5: Antlers (2021)

Day Five. Here's the wikipedia for the synopsis. Spoilers will follow in my thoughts below.

Let's start with: I don't think this movie should exist.

I think it's immensely disrespectful to have white people making wendigo movies, especially when you're inventing lore for it. If that's what you need to work with, you have fucked up. Make it an unspecified evil spirit or whatever if you need to, especially if you're going to mechanicize it. This movie is also a lot of poverty porn. It's weird that we're still doing this.

Performances, Keri Russell is always great; Amy Madigan, for what little she has to do here, is great. Plemons should've had more to do a la Bugonia. Effects, I think it's ok; the end effects - the particles, the glowing heart, I'm sure they were doing their best. This would've killed in 2004. Less so in 2021. Felt very Marvel.

Do I have more to say on this one? Not really. I wish I watched something else for the 2021 slot. This was a clunker. Neat creature design though.
