Hallowatch 2026 No. 23: Gothika (2003)

Hey, another Dark Castle. Like many horror movies of this era, it starts strong and then wants to explain every damn detail. Whether this is because it does not trust you, the viewer; or because the studio stepped in to make them do that; or because these were made cheap and so "we'll fix it in reshoots" became "eh, good enough"; or because the writers were trying to do an M Night Shyamalan thing but were kind of terrible at it; or because big articulated sentimentality hadn't completely gone by the wayside yet and was still lingering like AI and Bicentennial Man hadn't flopped; who can say why it was done like this.

I wanted to like this movie, in part because I really enjoy an intense Penelope Cruz performance. Given the constituent parts, there's possibly a good, maybe a great movie in here. What was released is not that, which makes this movie frustrating.

Effects-wise, this movie is solid; Casting, it's great; it's really just the writing/directing that makes the whole thing fall apart. You need to give your viewers space to figure out what's going on, not just "here's the explanation, as delivered by the characters". I think you can make a horror movie about sexual violence, cults, but I also think Robert Zemeckis should be kept as far away as possible from that whole production.

Rewatch? Pass.

Sequel? Hard pass.

Remake? YES. Give this to someone who can let subtext exist. This feels like the sort of thing where, in the hands of an actually thoughtful director, the violence of the plot could be something other than lascivious. ■
